    The improvement on the collection system of the Tarmarack Solar Simulator beam was attemped. The basic study of evaluating the solid state laser materials for the solar pumping and also the work to construct a kinetic model algorithm for the flashlamp pumped iodine lasers were carried out. It was observed that the collector cone worked better than the lens assembly in order to collect the solar simulator beam and to focus it down to a strong power density. The study on the various laser materials and their lasing characteristics shows that the neodymium and chromium co-doped gadolinium scandium gallium garnet (Nr:Cr:GSGG) may be a strong candidate for the high power solar pumped solid state laser crystal. On the other hand the improved kinetic modeling for the flashlamp pumped iodine laser provides a good agreement between the theoretical model and the experimental data on the laser power output, and predicts the output parameters of a solar pumped iodine laser

    In order to evaluate the feasibility of the solar pumped dye laser, the parametric study of a dye laser amplifier pumped by a solar simulator and flashlamp was carried out, and the amplifier gains were measured at various pump beam irradiances on the dye cell. Rhodamine 6G was considered as a candidate for the solar pumped laser because of its good utilization of the solar spectrum and high quantum efficiency. The measurement shows that a solar concentration of 20,000 is required to reach the threshold of the dye. The work to construct a kinetic model algorithm which predicts the output parameter of laser was progressed. The kinetic model was improved such that there is good agreement between the theoretical model and experimental data for the systems defined previously as flashlamp pumped laser oscillator, and the long path length solar pumped laser

    Neutron scattering in strong magnetic fields is used to show the spin-resonance in superconducting CeCoIn5 (Tc=2.3 K) is a doublet. The underdamped resonance (\hbar \Gamma=0.069 \pm 0.019 meV) Zeeman splits into two modes at E_{\pm}=\hbar \Omega_{0}\pm g\mu_{B} \mu_{0}H with g=0.96 \pm 0.05. A linear extrapolation of the lower peak reaches zero energy at 11.2 \pm 0.5 T, near the critical field for the incommensurate "Q-phase" indicating that the Q-phase is a bose condensate of spin excitons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    What does reading look like? Can learning to read be reduced to the acquisition of a set of isolable skills, or proficiency in reading be equated with the independence of the solitary, silent reader of prose fiction? These conceptions of reading and reading development, which figure strongly in educational policy, may appear to be simple common sense. But both ethnographic data and evidence from literary texts suggest that such paradigms offer, at most, a partial and ahistorical picture of reading.     Pre-Pliocene Extension around the Gulf of California and the transfer of Baja California to the Pacific Plate

    Late Miocene (12ā€“5 Ma) extension around the edges of the Gulf of California has been alternatively attributed to ā€œBasin and Rangeā€ extension, back arc extension, or development of the Pacific-North America plate boundary. This extension was ENE directed and similar in structural style to extension in the Basin and Range province. Timing constraints permit nearly synchronous onset of this deformation in a belt extending SSE from northernmost Baja California to the mouth of the gulf. Where this extensional faulting continued through Pliocene time to the present, synchronous with motion on the modern transform plate boundary in the Gulf of California, no change in direction of extension can be resolved. Revised constraints on Pacific-North America plate motion support the development of this late Miocene extension as a component of Pacific-North America displacement that could not be accommodated by strike-slip displacement along the existing plate boundary west of the Baja California peninsula. This scenario implies that transfer of Baja California from the North America plate to the Pacific plate was a gradual process, beginning about 12ā€“10 Ma, when motion of the Pacific plate relative to North America was partitioned into separate regimes of strike-slip and dip-slip displacement on opposite sides of Baja California
